Structural noise protection measures:

The study on the effectiveness of anti-noise walls showed the following: Even though they lower the noise from rail and bus traffic, that from road traffic will in fact increase slightly as it will reverberate off the anti-noise wall. Given that road traffic noise is the dominant factor and drowns out all other sources of noise, erecting an anti-noise wall would do little to improve the overall situation.  

Positioning of bus stops:

Representatives from traffiQ presented two alternative options: In the first version, the stops will be positioned in much the same way as was shown in the first resolved planning proposal. In the second model the stop of bus route 56 is relocated to the central island, meaning that the stops of bus routes 56, 252 and 60 would then all be on the central island, creating a more complex traffic situation than in version 1. For this reason a traffic light will be required, for example in combination with a pedestrian crossing. From traffiQ’s point of view, version 1 is preferable as it will require less technology (no traffic light required), traffic conditions would be less complex and the distances passengers have to cover to change buses shorter.

Reducing the noise emitted by buses:

Possible structural solutions include the following: an anti-noise wall (with moderate effect, see above), a shelter with a closed and glazed rear, as well as sound-absorbing tarmac. The provision of a break room is expected to impact favorably on noise levels, as bus drivers would be able to park their vehicles and spend their break times indoors if the weather is very hot or cold. Thus, additional equipment such as heating and air-conditioning need not be operated during idle times.

To conclude, Mr. Wernet summarized the results and made the following recommendations to the local consultative council:

  • The chestnut tree be preserved.
  • The idea of an anti-noise wall be abandoned, as it will not have the desired effect that would justify its construction.
  • Given that relocating the stop of bus route 56 will require putting traffic lights in place; of the two alternatives presented, version 1 (as shown in the resolution to adopt the proposal) seems feasible (assuming the no. 56 bus operates only at daytime and on work days). He recommended realization of version 1 unless the local consultative council decides otherwise.
  • A break room for bus drivers be established in the new supermarket building.
  • The areas around bus stops be surfaced with sound-absorbing paving.
  • Bus drivers be instructed to operate heating and air-conditioning with the engine switched off.
  • Until such a time as construction work on the redesign of the plaza proper begins, the bus stops once again be relocated from eastwards Breitlacherstraße between the railroad tracks and the existing “old” supermarket.

The working party commissioned no further research assignments and the committee concluded its work. Mr. Wernet thanked all participants and ended the meeting.


Presentation of the urban design at the Local Consultative Council meeting on April 9, 2013:

The results from the working panel provided the bedrock for the prospective design of the future town plaza’s western section. The design was presented as part of a meeting held on April 9, 2013 by the Local Consultative Council 7. Overall feedback was very positive. The following items are awaiting further consideration or revision:

  • Venue for a weekly market
  • Water and power supply for the weekly market and events
  • Guidance strips, wherever possible in straight lines, for disabled persons
  • Reduction of taxi ranks to create short-term parking spaces

Citizens were especially interested in the possibility of holding a weekly market. They moreover wished that the square be made available for other events. The City Planning Department will look into the possibility of meeting the citizens’ requests in the course of further proceedings.
