Covering the A 661 interstate

Covering the A 661 interstate is an important measure for reducing traffic noise, and at the same time a prerequisite for implementing the urban development and landscape master planning. In the course of the preparatory study DEGES (Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH), which was commissioned jointly by the State of Hessen and the City of Frankfurt/Main, examined solutions in several scenarios in terms of expediency, economic feasibility, and the level of noise protection.

In a comparative assessment of these factors the length of the prospective tunnel was optimized and brought into line with the urban development master planning. Completely covering the interstate it for its entire length of 1,200 meters from Friedberger Landstrasse to the bridge in Seckbach, as was originally considered, is not absolutely necessary in order to achieve the set planning objectives. According to current findings, a tunnel reduced to around 400 meters in length will be just as effective with regard to the positive impact of covering the A661, at considerably reduced construction costs. The cost of covering the interstate over a length of 1,200 meters is estimated at around 213 million euros, while a cover of 400 meters’ length would involve costs of around 91 million euros only.
